Franke Washroom Systems automates print publications with crossbase

Aarburg, 22/02/2012: Franke is a global innovator and market leader in the development and manufacturing of systems for domestic kitchens, for professional restaurant chains, preparing coffee, supplying drinks and hygiene solutions. Around 11,000 members of staff are employed in more than 70 affiliated companies around the world. The "Washroom Systems" division for washrooms and sanitary facilities involves production and sales of sanitary system solutions in over 40 countries.

The sales manual

The new 2012 sales manual for Switzerland is 232 pages long including artwork pages; the product section itself is 197 pages long including the table of contents and item index. The sales manual was produced automatically with crossbase in three languages (Italian, French, German). Data sheets in 17 language/country variants were also produced for all items. These are available for download in the online catalog.

The print production

Print production of the product pages is based on a flow frame layout, which automatically wraps product blocks page by page. The product blocks comprise product photo and drawing, a product description, the optional accessories and order data. The order data contains the Franke item number, the wholesaler's item number and the price. The flow frame layout is perfect because the individual languages are of different lengths. The artwork pages are also automated – they are pre-filled with images and text via the database and then freely positioned by the media designer. The layout is saved back to the database for subsequent updates and language changes.

The specific features

One particular feature of market-specific communication is the use of the language/country inheritance function.

  • The DE-CH, FR-CH and IT-CH languages are used for the Swiss market.
  • Since these languages mostly overlap with DE, FR and IT, an automatic inheritance mechanism is used. If the texts exist in DE-CH, FR-CH and IT-CH, they are used. If they do not exist in these forms, the texts in the basic languages of DE, FR and IT are used.
  • Translation work is therefore eliminated if the basic language texts can be used.

A further special feature of the catalog is the texts generated for the product description, order data and WxHxD.

  • The texts are generated with powerful logic using crossbase.text and the XML transformation language XSLT.
  • Text generation is automated for all languages and is product group-specific.
  • Only the individual components which repeat regularly in the texts therefore have to be translated.

The catalog production workflow also includes the production of data sheets. These are also produced automatically per item with crossbase.print. The documents produced are maintained using the corresponding items in the PIM system, exported as XML and automatically published on the website in the context of the item.
The overall crossmedia concept of a PIM maintained across countries and the automation of print and online media is therefore achieved.
