As a product manager, you are the link between marketing and product development. You are familiar with the product logic in your product range, e.g. arrangement and order of your products, required accessories, spare parts, sets etc., and you know which products are displayed together.
Depending on the products and their variety, this may yield very complex logics, most of which could not be managed or maintained without the help of IT-based tools. Due to the internationalisation of the markets and the increase in product variants, languages, currencies and measurement units involved, you face a complex task.
The basics for an efficient product management
- Consolidate data sets: In many cases, a company initially has several data sets with product information which have evolved gradually. It should therefore be possible to transfer product data which has already been maintained from the ERP or from other data sets to a media-neutral product database. All commerical data from the ERP, CAD drawings, product images and texts as well as marketing-compatible texts and images are consolidated and managed centrally. So you have access to all pieces of information about your products language- and media-specifically.
- Simplify data management: In most cases, product data are not maintained permanently but only in case the printed catalogue is reprinted. Digital media, however, require up-to-date information. For this reason, product information should constantly be kept up-to-date in a central product database. Thus, data from one source can be used for the online catalogue, the online shop and for the creation of data sheets. This minimises search times, ensures the up-to-dateness of the data and avoids mistakes due to media disruptions.
- Map complex product logics: The data model of the media-neutral database should be organised in a way that allows for every possible product logic to be mapped and scanned easily. The support of individual workflows which support the product life cycle also plays a decisive role. The product views have to be flexibly configurable and it has to be possible to display them user-specifically. It should always be possible to check and detail dependencies such as accessories, sets and processing helps.
The solution
The PIM and cross-media solution by crossbase is the tool for an efficient accomplishment of these challenges. By connecting it to your ERP, commercial product informaton is constantly transferred to the media-neutral crossbase database. All further texts, pictures, graphics, drawings and many other media elements are also governed there. The crossbase data model maps any possible product logic and supports the allocation of product features, sort criterions, product texts, CAD drawings, accessories, sets, processing helps and any further characteristics.
Furthermore, the crossbase database supports maintenance of matching products by product rules, management of spare parts, parts lists for a product, maintenance of applications with recommended products and implementation of an application and product configurator including an extensive control equipment for the consultation of your customers. When used properly, the crossbase solution can help you shorten the time for your market launch (keyword "time to market"), while decreasing your process costs. This gives you a decisive strategic advantage in competition.
